Wimbledon and brand PR stunts: a match made in heaven

By August 6, 2015General

Wimbledon has come to a close for another year. In fact it seems like ages ago already, but before the hype completely dissipates, we felt it was only right to reflect on the top brand activations and PR stunts from the 2015 tournament.

With so many brands fighting for attention, one thing’s for sure – it wasn’t just strawberries and cream that captured the attention of tennis fans this year.

Here’s a few of our favourites from 2015:

Bathstores QLoo

In a clever topical PR stunt, bathroom retailer Bathstore created ‘the ultimate toilet experience’ – a Wimbledon-themed portaloo on wheels dubbed the ‘QLoo’. The QLoo circulated the tournament’s queue, and was manned by ball boys and girls who held people’s spaces in the queue whilst they used it.

As well as being fully equipped with an AstroTurf interior and a radio which streamed live match commentary, the toilet was also scented with a strawberries and cream room fragrance to add to the experience.

Those wishing to use it were asked to tweet @bathstore using #QLoo and the team made their way to people in the queue.

Jaguar

Jaguar arranged a PR stunt to celebrate the start of its official sponsorship of Wimbledon, by surprising two fans with a ride to SW19 in their new model XE, chauffeured by former American tennis champion John McEnroe.

The British car maker (which has become an official sponsor of the All England Club’s summer tournament), laid on the publicity stunt as part of its #FeelWimbledon campaign.

The two lucky Londoners, who won VIP tickets in a Jaguar competition, attended the quarter finals. As part of the prize, they were chaffered to the event; however, they had no idea that their chauffer was going to be McEnroe.

Jaguar fitted biometric bands to the winners’ wrists, and watched as their pulses shot up 60% to 93bpm when the tennis star took the wheel.

You can see the memorable PR stunt in this video, which was filmed on hidden cameras onboard.

Zizzi

To mark the end of a significant two weeks in the English sporting calendar, Zizzi worked with a celebrity food artist to create a tasty PR stunt. For a limited time, they sold a bespoke pizza portrait of the Wimbledon 2015 Men’s Champion, Novak Djokovic. The famous sporting face was created with a range of fresh Italian toppings including ham, yellow pepper, olives, cheese, sweetcorn, spring onions and green peppers to resemble the grass court.
