This week, saw the release of a brand new player in the Global smartphone market.

Jolla – pronounced Yol-la – is due to be released at the end of the year and will only be sold online.

The Jolla team comprises of a group of ex Nokia engineers who had worked on the Mee-go platform, abandoned by Nokia in favour of adopting the current Windows OS for all of its handsets. They have developed an OS called Sailfish which is a unique take on the mobile user interface, making much more use of small, subtle gestures.

Antii Saarnio, chairman and co-founder of Jolla, says:

“The team really felt that this was one of the best phones in the market, even though it was quite under-marketed,”

The phone will offer a 4.5inch LCD screen, 16mb of internal storage and an 8 megapixel camera.

One of the unique features is something Jolla call “The other half”

This is where the phone literally splits into two, with the rear half of the phone being interchangeable, both in look and colour – but potentially the hardware also. The operating system interface will actually change, depending on what type of cover you have – for instance, a red cover would mean the interface taking on a red colour scheme, on-screen.

These changes could include almost limitless opportunities for customers to personalise and revamp their handsets as and when they choose.

What is interesting is how they are positioning their phone – they know that they do not have the financial muscle of the established players and so need to differentiate themselves in other ways.

The video they released yesterday was a rally call for everybody, to “join the tribe’ and be a part of a new movement in mobile technology.

We hope that the Jolla handset provides the kind of user experience necessary to make a name for itself in the mobile technology marketplace. They have a big task ahead, but we are extremely excited to see how Jolla will take on the marketplace doing things their way!
