Guy Fawkes Night Things that surprised us last week…

Last night watching the full documentary of the Red Bull Stratos project on BBC, I was in awe with how much commitment Red Bull gave towards this project. The planning and logistics of Red Bull Media House to capture every single shot of Felix Baungartner mission jumping from the edge of space was flawless. They’ve pulled out all the stops in delivering a live video feed that not only reached live-streaming records but also captured the imagination of millions more around the world. Top job!

Jerry Springer… We all know the name and we all know the show, heck, we all know the chant…JEEEERY, JEEEERY!!! The Jerry Springer Show is, I suppose, one of the greatest albeit trashiest TV exports from our US cousins. Like it or not, we’ve probably all had our moment of watching in awe and heckling the guest (obviously through the TV) at our outrage that Shenequas, baby daddy’s, aunty’s, momma slept with her next door neighbours babysitters transexual husband who works at the local McDonalds. Now here’s the surprise we discovered, when settling into a nice cultural Thursday episode of Question Time (QT)… JERRY SPRINGER IS AN INTELLIGENT MAN. Yes, the man himself, once upon a time (before the fame and glamour) was a Democratic mayor in Ohio, news anchor and musician (thank you Wikipedia, for confirming!). On said episode of QT, Jerry was witty, interesting, endearing and dare we say respectable. SURPRISE SURPRISE!

Remember, remember the 5th of November.. right? No, one thing we are surprised at this week is the lack of bonfire’s night spirit. Well, it’s only the night when old Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the House of Parliament, our great physical pillar and reminder of “British Democracy”. Aside from the politics, what’s more important is the annual buzz for big noisy whooshy fireworks, sparklers that will have your eye out, bonfires which makes your face burn and a drippy sticky toffee apple. Firstly, we’ve discovered that you’ve got to really hunt out such an occasion this year and then to make matters worse.. pay for the pleasure (and we are talking closer to the £10 mark than a bit of loose change!)… We still love this great occasion, and are surprised more of you don’t too!

Happy bonfires night everyone!
