Fragrance house Givaudan and JWT Singapore have created a “Smell A Memory” kit to evoke emotional memories in patients suffering from dementia and Alzheimer’s.
Each kit contains scents personalised for individual patients based on their age, ethnicity, family history and personal stories.
‘School Days’, ‘Freshly Cut Grass’ and ‘Bed Time Stories’ are just a few of the scents that are supposed to help families engage and connect with those suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s.
The team worked with medical staff at a nursing home and another care facility in Singapore. They tested the power of the scents during two therapy sessions and found that the ‘Smell A Memory’ kits sparked memories in some patients and stimulated strong emotions in others.
Due to the success of the kits in Singapore, Givaudan now plans to extend the programme to other regions as part of its sustainability initiative.
